The long awaited return of Y&T to Atlanta ended this Saturday night at The 120 Tavern. My biggest laugh of the night was when I checked in to get access to the show. The massive security guard, after seeing my name, Antonius Maxiumus Rex, smiled and said that it was a great gladiator name and that he was also a gladiator.
Formed in 1974 and originally known as Yesterday & Today, the group shortened their name to Y&T when they signed with A&M Records in 1980. On the A&M label their first studio production was Earthshaker in 1981. Many metal fans consider this a classic album. The return of this hard rock/heavy metal band to the 120 Tavern was spearheaded by a group of devoted fans, lead by Tony Ciccozzi.
The cloying feeling of the fans anticipation was evident at the 120 Tavern as I made my way into the Music Hall. The hall was crowded with fans, many of which were wearing Y&T t-shirts and caps to show their dedication to the band. As the sound team made there way out to tune guitars and check amps the crowd started chanting “Y AND T, Y AND T…” and then the roof must have rattled with the roar of the crowd as the band walked out onto stage… the rest is another chapter of music history with over two hours of heart and ear pounding music.

Every Y&T fan that I have spoken with considers them the most under rated bands from the 70s and 80s and raved about their onstage presences. The band’s sound is straight forward classic 80s rock with long hair streaming, kick ass guitar solos, and pounding drums.
