Sweet Crude is a sextuplet indie pop-rock ensemble from New Orleans, Louisiana. They performed at the 2016 Gasparilla Music Festival in Tampa, FL. They were part of a weekend of live music, food, and fun. Along the Hillsborough River at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, five stages were set up to house an eclectic collection of artists from almost every genre represented in music today. Other artists performing today include Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli, Stephen Marley, Lucero, Antibalas, MS MR, and many more.
Sweet Crude is the winners of the 2014 Big Easy Award for “Best Emerging Artist”, these seven Cajun players are chock-full of percussion instruments. Four of the members stood behind some sort of drum; and much to my surprise, not a single guitar. The music was catchy and delightful, when they sang in unison it sounded like a rally cry for optimism. Their shift between English and French Louisiana within a song is fanciful yet off beat, but it all flows seamlessly. They definitely create this infectious, tribal, NOLA, party rock, peace and love vibe when they play.
