It was a perfect summer night for Jazz on the Lawn with Joey Sommerville at the Callanwolde Amphitheater. It’s not often that one gets the opportunity to enjoy a night under the stars listening to music in the back yard of a magnificent 1920’s Tudor Revival style mansion. Fortunately, the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center provides just such an opportunity throughout the summer. The Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, is a non-profit organization whose mission is to be a premier public participatory arts and cultural center.
Nestled behind the main house is the Callanwolde Amphitheater. Surrounded by trees and containing a neatly manicured lawn, this venue quickly became one of my favorite locations for an outdoor concert. The open seating area of the amphitheater was filled with music fans sprawled on blankets and sitting in lawn chairs. Closest to the stage in the reserved section there were tables and chairs. Guests are encouraged to bring all the picnic trimmings and drinks and food were in abundance throughout the crowd.
Joey Sommerville is a contemporary jazz artist that infuses jazz with soul and world music. Joey Sommerville belives that “If you aren’t touching the listener’s soul, then you aren’t really playing music.” Joey definitely touched the souls of many and had a number of long term fans in the crowd. This was made perfectly clear when Joey sang “Red Cups Up” and the crowd raise their red cups and almost drowned out the speakers singing the chorus!
