Sully Erna at The Capitol Theatre

In support of his 2nd solo album Hometown Life, Godsmack frontman Sully Erna is touring select cities across the U.S. On Thursday October 27, Sully brought a storytellers kind of feel to the Capitol Theatre in Clearwater, FL. Opposite of what you would normally think of when you think of Sully, he played an intimate acoustic performance with fellow tourmates Chris Lester and Tim Theriault. This night gave us a glimpse into the more subtle singer-songwriter side of this talented musician. The concept that Sully stressed throughout the show was the power and importance of music. In its simplest form, it is the interpretation of vibrations, and a simple change can redirect and change the course of what you hear and feel. His anecdotes and stories in between songs like: “Avalon”, “Sinners Prayer”, and “Your Own Drum” gave us insight into his world. His personality was on full display, and spoke louder than any of his words. He was engaging and humorous and above all, sincere. During the show, Sully read aloud a special note he received from a young fan named Kylie, who was sitting in the front row. She thought he was the ”bestest” singer and songwriter; and you could tell he was genuinely touched and amused, flashing that infectious smile multiple times. He paid tribute to fallen music legends covering “Nutshell” by Alice In Chains with a slide show of those we have lost over the years. Sully ended the night with a rousing rendition of Aerosmith’s “Dream On” which segued into The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” with full crowd participation, sing-a-long style. I left the theater with a different impression of Sully Erna, you can take his talent for granted when he is with Godsmack, but on his own, his artistry is on full display and the talent is immeasurable.
