Australian blues rock guitarist, songwriter and singer Hamish Anderson returned to SXSW in Austin, TX. It’s obvious that Hamish Anderson has a great work ethic, he put in nine performances at SXSW including headlining the National Geographic SXSW party, the LiveVIbe party, and a Pabst Blue Ribbon Live Taping. I set aside time to catch his official showcase at Cooper’s Old Time Pit BBQ. When it comes to blues, I have found that BBQ is the perfect companion.
Hamish Anderson has the bitter sweet distinction to be the last artist to open for the late BB King. Listening to him perform one realizes that Hamish Anderson is doing honor to blues greats like BB King every moment that he is on stage. If I hadn’t know that he was from Melbourne, Australia, I would have assumed that he was from Memphis or Louisiana as he kicked off his set with “Burn.” This track has a staccato drum kick that is heavily overladen with some raw guitar. His music also has an old school feel to it, that gives it a timeless blues feel. He stays “true to the blues” while rocking his way through his original songs.
The rest of his set was just as outstanding as he performed tracks from his 2016 full length album Trouble. Hamish Anderson is one of the great blues artists of this generation. I’m sure that BB King is looking down on his career and pleased with where Hamish Anderson will be taking the blues in years to come. Of course, you SHOULD add him to your music library.
