London based singer song-writer Jacob Banks came to the stage proclaiming “I came here to sing a lot of depressing songs.” He did spend most of his set at SXSW on the Mazda Studio stage at Empire Studio & Garage. crooning soulful heart wrenching ballads. For example, his song “Part Time Lover” is about dating someone that is “rubbish” but you don’t have the self esteem to leave so you stay with them.
Despite his set opening proclamation he included two very up tempo songs. “Chain Smoking” was a hard hit song with heavy rock influences. “Unholy War” was another rock infused song but was heavily laden with reggae rhythms.
