The Marvelous Macy Gray at the Atlanta Jazz Festival

Much to my joy, in the middle of her Stripped Tour, Macy Gray came to the stage at the Atlanta Jazz Festival. Macy Gray is a Grammy award winning singer-songwriter, actress and record producer.  When one thinks of Macy Gray it’s not typically jazz that comes to mind.  Since the release of her multiplatinum selling album On How Life Is Macy Gray’s distinctive raspy voice is best known for soul, R&B and pop hits.  This all changed last year with the release of her 9th studio album Stripped.   Stripped is a departure from Macy Gray’s ongoing catalog and is a jazzy paradise.  I’m sure that Stripped mixed with her catalog of hits is a big part of what sealed Macy Gray’s spot in the line up.  Her popularity was evident as one looked out into throng of people sprawled out in front of the Atlanta Jazz Festival’s Contemporary Stage.

The crowd roared when Macy Gray came out in a red feather boa and long black dress.  When an artist with a catalog as large as Macy Gray’s comes to the stage concert goers always wonder what songs they will hear.  What’s your favorite Macy Gray album? No matter your favorite, Macy Gray gave music fans a wonderful tour through her catalog singing everything from “I Try” from On How Life Is to “Annabelle” off her latest release Stripped.  There were two themes that carried throughout Macy Gray’s performance.  As she talked to the crowd she continuously thanked them for coming out on a Saturday night to hear her play and she encouraged everyone to be true to themselves and be free.  The last message was sealed as she covered Frank Sinatra’s “My Way”

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I’ll say it clear
I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain
I’ve lived a life that’s full
I’ve traveled each and every highway
But more, much more than this
I did it my way
I left Piedmont Park and the Atlanta Jazz Festival invigorated by Macy Gray’s performance and sounds of her voice and energy are etched in my soul forever.  Ah, the joy of live music!  When is your next concert?
