INTERVIEW: Break Up Songs and Love Songs with Morgan James

We kick off our Valentine’s Day themed reflection on love songs and break up songs with Morgan James.   Morgan James studied opera and voice at Julliard and took a tour on Broadway before deciding to bless the world with her soulful original music and amazing recreations of other artist’s songs.

Last year Morgan James visited Atlanta as part of her Reckless Abandon Tour.  We had a chance to talk with Morgan James when she came to Atlanta and share our experience of her performance at City Winery Atlanta.

Enjoy Morgan James’ commentary of break up songs and love songs.

My favorite break up song is “Ain’t No way” by Aretha Franklin. My favorite love song would have to be “God only Knows” by The Beach Boys

“Ain’t No Way” was one of the first songs I covered when I started my own band, and I just love the tension and the heartache of it.  Aretha is perfection, and Cissy Houston is singing the killer back ground vocals!  I wanted to write my OWN “Ain’t No Way”, and that’s why I had the courage to write my song “Say The Words”

No more long goodbyes, don’t appologize
Open the pages where I’ve been erased
Don’t make me guess by the look on your face
Open your heart and just let me see
There ain’t no place for me
Won’t you say the words – “Say the Words”

Even though many of my songs are sad, i do have some happy songs!  I think my two best love songs are “Drown” and “By My Side”

Luckily, I get to travel the world making music with my sweetheart, Doug Wamble, and everyday is Valentine’s Day!

If you haven’t added this phenomenal singer to your music library yet you can pick up her LPs Reckless Abandon, Hunter, Morgan James Live or Blue at the iTunes store.  Be sure to check out Morgan James’ latest project Jesus Christ Superstar.  This all woman performance of Jesus Christ Superstar features Shoshana Bean as Judas Iscariot and Morgan James as Jesus Christ.

Be sure to check back here at Libro Muscia between now and Valentine’s Day for more music picks from your favorite artists and some of you soon to be favorite artists.

If you haven’t shared you favorite love song and favorite break up song we would love to hear from you.  On Valentine’s Day I will pick my favorites from the submissions and give away t-shirts, stickers and tickets to an upcoming show.
