The September installment of the monthly Press PLAY event series featured soulful singer songwriter Lola Cole on the mic. Press PLAY is curated by husband and wife duo, spoken word poet Amena Brown & DJ Opdiggy. Once a month, through the end of the year, Press PLAY will bring spoken word, great music, and laughter to Ponce City Market within the Skyline‘s RFD Social. Tonight’s show gave my friends and I a first time visit to Skyline Park, the theme park located atop Ponce City Market, and the 9 Mile Station restaurant. Getting there before doors also gave us a chance to enjoy what has to be one of the best views of the Atlanta skyline.
Once doors opened and the crowd spilled into the RF Social the mood was a special one. RF Social feels like what just about everyone wishes their entertainment space at home felt like. Inviting couches and chairs, board games and tables games, all centered around a bar stocked to your delight with a vibrant staff ready to shake up or stir your favorite cocktail. The space invites conversation and the crowd certainly seemed to agree as I witnessed old friends reacquaint and overheard many new introductions. Just as I settled into my chair and took my first sip of my drink Lola Cole stepped up to the mic….
Local Cole’s voice and her music hearkens back to the soul music of the 60’s and 70’s with an earthy, rich and vibrant voice that reminds me of the likes of Nina Simone, Tina Turner, Neneh Cherry and Chaka Khan. Her set was a mix of original music and covers including a mash up of a few songs by Chaka. Of the songs she performed tonight “Bitter Cold Nights” moved me the most. “Bitter Cold Nights” is a much needed reminder for us to fight for love and to make sure that hate does not have a place in our homes and in our community.
Each time I see Lola Cole, I ask her the same question “When are you releasing your album?” Tonight she shared that she has two of the songs done and will be back in the studio soon to add to the project. Stay tuned to Libro Musica for news about this project. You can also follow Lola Cole on Facebook and Instagram.
Atlanta music fans should mark their calendars this year’s remaining Press PLAY events on October 12th, November 9th and December 7th.
