After much wailing and gnashing of teeth, I have given in to answer and participate in this year’s Valentine’s Day series with my favorite love songs and breakup songs. I have never been one to officially celebrate Valentine’s Day but I’m on board this year to share some music. Why do I avoid the holiday? I balk at the pressure to be romantic and to express love for the people that are special in my life. Romantic love is something that should be manifested every day of the year.
Valentine’s Day Q&A With Antonius
What’s your favorite love song?
Whenever someone asks me to name a favorite song, I struggle to answer as my mind is flooded with a deluge of memories and moments. There are many, many songs that are dear to me and sometimes a mood or a season can change which songs make my list of top choices. Holding true to form, I have to share two love songs.
When it comes to love songs there has been one that has been top on my list since 1992, when it was released. Rachelle Ferrell’s duet with Will Downing, “Nothing Has Ever Felt This Good” captures that amazing feeling you have when you reflect on how lucky you feel to have a special love in your life. Will Downing’s verse sums it all up:
What did I do to deserve her
Lord knows I’m only human
Can this be
Someone truly for me
Or is it a cruel fantasy
Though “Nothing Has Ever Felt This Good” has been with me for almost two decades there is a Lisa Stansfield song that has special new meaning to me. Hearing it live last year at Center Stage there were lyrics to the song that resonated with the love that I share today.
What’s your favorite breakup song?
I have two memorable breakups that evoke different feelings. Each has a song that captures many of the emotions that came to me during the breakup and as I reflect on the ending of the relationship.
When it comes to breakups and heart ache my playlist is amazingly short it consists of just one song, P!nk’s “Blow Me”! I had this song on repeat for about three months as I went through my first emotional breakup.
Two memorable breakups and only one song on my playlist? Yes, my latest heartache is a few years behind me but the song that brings memories of that breakup is one that still brings me sadness. Because of this it’s not something I want to hear over and over again. Unlike P!nk’s “Blow Me” which is an empowering song, Morgan James on “You Thought Not” is all about love that ends despite your greatest hopes.
Well I wasn’t quite right but you didn’t know why
I guess deep down I knew this day would come
Do you have any favorite traditions for Valentine’s Day?
I typically find myself at home on Valentine’s Day for a home cooked meal. Today is also as good an excuse as any to also put on some of my favorite slow grooves and snuggle up with someone special.
