Valentine’s Day Q&A with Julianna Smaltz
What’s your favorite love song? ‘”Bridge Over Troubled Water”. You could argue it’s not a love song, but when I hear it, I cry and remember people I would nearly take a bullet for. It’s expressing like, “hey, I am HERE. don’t forget about me–we’re in this life-thing together.”
What’s your favorite breakup song? “Hard Feelings” by Lorde, off the album Melodrama. She’s going through a painful breakup, but it’s still dripping with love. That resonates with me as a woman who loves deeply and almost desperately in a “loveless generation”. I hear the song and think: maybe love isn’t complicated–maybe we get caught up in our attachments and that mixes in with our true love for someone. Human minds are complicated, but love is an eternal energy I can’t quite understand yet.
Do you have any favorite traditions for Valentine’s Day? Nah, I think the concept is over-done and over-rated. Love-day should be every day. I celebrate it like any other day– work hard, work on music, and tell people I love them when I feel that emotion well up inside.
Is there one of your original songs that you think everyone needs on their valentine’s day playlist or on their breakup playlist? Lots of unreleased stuff, yeah. But for now… “Lonely” – Dara Carter and Julianna Smaltz on Spotify or Apple Music.
