Blues, Rock and Gospel with Cody Matlock at Venkman’s

When you start rocking out on stage at a local blues joint as a teenager it’s easy to have a 2018 like Cody Matlock enjoyed. The singer, songwriter and guitar player opened for Lalah Hathaway at Center Stage; performed on a private island to open for Kenny Chesney; headlined shows across Atlanta (Aisle 5, Vinyl, Eddie’s Attic, The Masquerade and Smith’s Olde Bar); and recorded and released his debut EP with his full band.

In 2019 he continues to perform on stage while in the studio working on his second album. I have been listening to him since his teenage days back at Darwin’s Burgers & Blues and every year I see him hone his craft a little more. Earlier this year he put his talents to the test as an early contestant on American Idol. While he didn’t get to work his way to the televised rounds he learned a lot from the experience and got to taste the bright lights of Hollywood. Tonight’s performance at Venkman’s showed that Cody Matlock’s path to success as a performer has nothing but upward potential.

His set was filled with the blues, rock and gospel music that is typical of a Cody Matlock performance. He gave a sneak peak of a song or two from his upcoming album and performed songs from his debut album, including “Give It To Me.” “Give It To Me” is a soulful ballad where he extolls his ideal mate for all the things that they have and his desire to have it. If you have ever longed for another, this song is one to add to your music library.
