On March 17th, Nat King Cole was born in Montgomery, Alabama, 100 years ago. To celebrate Nat King Cole’s legacy, jazz vocalist, lyricist and composer Sweet Lu Olutosin took to the stage at the Southwest Arts Center to embrace and embody the music of Nat King Cole.
What I love most about Nat King Cole is the ability he had to disarm people regardless of their views of beliefs. He appeals to our most common denominator – our humanity.Sweet Lu Olutosin
Nat King Cole’s music has a timeless quality to it and his vocal arrangements are legendary. Sweet Lu took to the stage and artfully crooned his way through many of Nat King Cole’s classics. Some of my favorites from the night were “Route 66”, “Sweet Lorraine” and “Nature Boy.” With each of these songs Sweet Lu Olutosin demonstrated a virtuosity that is a rare find.
